Violin Terminology

Violins, or fiddles, are very popular and versatile string instruments. Violin lessons are used by musicians to play anything from folk music to classical masterpieces. Whether using an antique or electric violin, the principles are the same. Beginners may find it helpful to familiarize themselves with basic violin terminology before embarking on their first lesson.

  • Pegs - The knobs are used to tune a violin by tightening or loosening the strings. A staff member of an instrument store, or a teacher can assist a beginner with properly tuning an instrument.
  • Neck - The length between the pegs and the body of the instrument.
  • Fingerboard - The part of the violin where musicians press the strings down, creating different tones.
  • F Holes - The openings in the body of the violin that allows sound to be heard. Electric violins may not have f holes, as they have a different method of amplification.
  • Bridge - The part of the violin that raises the strings away from the neck and fingerboard of the instrument, and keeps the strings separated from one another.
  • Bow - The part of the instrument that is run over the strings, producing music.
  • Case - A protective cover for transporting a violin. They are relatively cheap, and are very important for protecting the instrument from damage.
  • Sizes - Violins come in a range of sizes, denoted as fractions. A 1/16 violin is appropriate for a three to four year old child, whereas a 4/4 violin is suitable for teenagers and adults. Rental services and used instrument stores provide a cheaper alternative to purchasing new instruments for growing children.

Violins are essentially string instruments that date back to the 16th century. They typically have four strings, and are tuned in perfect fifths. The violin is played with a bow, and is most commonly seen in classical orchestras. There are many modern and antique violins for sale, which can be played or simply collected and displayed. As you may already know, many middle and high school students play the violin in band or classical music classes. When you buy an instrument like this, it usually comes accompanied with a storage case and bow. The violin is a very popular string instrument made from wood, and is sometimes compared to the viola, fiddle, and cello. The viola is actually a much larger instrument, and is generally tuned a fifth lower than the violin, while the cello is a very large bass instrument with strings. As for the fiddle, it is essentially the same as the violin, but it is used to play folk and country music, as opposed to classical. There are music lessons available for the violin through music tutors and private instructors across the country. As for shopping for this instrument or having it repaired, there are several shops and stores that can assist with this. When people play the violin, they often read from sheet music in order to create harmonic tunes. If you have a music store in your area, it is easy to get more information on new and antique violins for sale, as well as accessories like bows and extra strings for this instrument.
