Terms used in the Waste Container Industry

While most businesses and homeowners rarely give much thought to the garbage bins in their building, these containers offer an important job in keeping homes and offices clean and sanitary. The ability to dispose of trash properly and recycle appropriate rubbish ensures a safer environment overall. When you are in the market for waste containers, it helps to be familiar with common terminology used in the industry.

  • Recycle Bins - These waste containers are specifically used to dispose of rubbish that can be recycled. Trash collected in this container is typically taken to a recycling center where it can be transformed for reuse.
  • Wheelie Bins - Large garbage cans that come equipped with wheels on the bottom for easier mobility. These containers are a popular choice with many waste management companies today, for both residential and commercial use.
  • Dumpster - A term used to describe larger waste containers often used at commercial and public buildings. Dumpsters may be categorized as either front or rear-loading containers.
  • Lockbar - A feature sometimes found on front-load waste containers that locks the bin until it is emptied into a garbage truck.
  • Industrial Bins - A very large waste container that is used to dispose of garbage at a commercial building. May also be used at construction sites to haul away debris and trash.
  • Chemical Waste Bins - A specialty waste container used to dispose of hazardous substances, whether liquids or solids. Special procedures are usually involved to remove the hazardous waste from the property.
  • Hazardous Waste - Any type of garbage that must be disposed of in a special way. Waste may include both liquids and solids and may be dangerous to one's health if it comes in direct contact with the body.

Waste is an unfortunate byproduct of life that needs to be removed and disposed of properly. If not, it can pose health risks and safety hazards. Waste containers are often utilized to collect garbage, trash, chemical waste, and debris. Such containers can take the form of bins, rubbish cans, drums, barrels, and large waste receptacles. Waste containers can be used for everything from yard waste and weeds to medical and biohazard waste. Customers can buy cheap waste containers in bulk from a wholesaler or supplier. Or, on a smaller scale, consumers can purchase recycle bins or trash cans from retail home improvement stores. Some are meant for residential use, while others are meant for commercial or industrial use. Construction sites have an abundance of large garbage bins and dumpsters to collect and remove debris. Consumers can buy decorative trash cans and bins for their kitchens and bathrooms at bed and bath shops or department stores. They can also purchase outdoor garbage cans from home improvement stores. In addition, office owners can rent large waste receptacles from companies that specialize in these fixed structures. In these cases, waste collection companies regularly dispose of trash on a monthly or weekly basis. Companies that sell waste containers may also sell recycle bins. Waste collection services have been around about as long as there have been trucks to haul the waste. The mid 1970s saw the invention of the first grapple truck for municipal waste collection, but before that, in the late 1930s, the industry saw a big change when compactors were first used in trash collection trucks. And for centuries before that, wagons were used to haul away solid waste and other trash.
