Important Terms about Waste Management

Waste management is an important part of modern industrial society. Most of us depend on regular garbage collection to get rid of the trash we routinely accumulate. In addition to this, there are private waste management companies who collect and dispose of used and unneeded items. If you plan on calling a waste management company, or if you're just looking up more information on the subject, there are some key terms and concepts that may confuse you. Below we'll define some of them.

  • Solid Waste - A term encompassing a wide variety of waste materials, generally those of non-hazardous nature. Solid waste can include liquid, sludge, and semi-solid materials, but does not encompass sewage.
  • Landfill - A site where trash is dumped after it has been collected. Waste is compacted to take up as little space as possible, then covered with a layer of soil or other materials. Landfills can become hazardous to the environment, so steps must be taken to sanitize and maintain them properly.
  • Recycling - Collecting and reusing waste materials in various products. Many different types of materials can be recycled. Among the most commonly recycled types of waste are newspapers and aluminum cans.
  • Composting - The process of fertilizing soil with decomposing plant remains or other organic materials.
  • Municipal Solid Waste - Waste material derived from everyday household activities. Also called MSW. Examples of MSW include newspapers and discarded food.
  • Hazardous Waste - Used materials that can pollute the environment, due to their acidic, toxic, combustible, or otherwise dangerous composition. Hazardous waste should not be disposed of in the same manner as everyday domestic waste. Medical waste, such as used needles, generally fall under this category, and care must be taken to have it removed and sanitized correctly.

If trash and hazardous waste are not treated or managed correctly, more and more landfills will be created. This is why so much of our garbage is recycled nowadays. There are a number of professionals and services involved with waste management and the proper treatment of recyclable materials. These experts routinely collect all kinds of household trash, hazardous chemicals, motor oil, and industrial rubbish in order to dispose of it properly. Typically municipal or city-controlled garbage trucks and dumpsters are used to aid with trash management services. Large vehicles can collect this waste, and transport it to landfills and recycling facility locations. With the population always growing, waste management and proper recycling becomes more and more important, especially in regards to landfills and pollution. The more people recycle, the fewer landfills will be needed, and the less pollution will build up.
