Common Terminology for Water Beds

A variety of beds and mattress types have been used over the years. One of these types is water beds. This unique style of mattress gained a lot of popularity in the 1980s, and is still used by many people around the world. As with other beds, water bed mattresses come in different sizes like king, queen, and double. In order to learn more about these innovative mattresses and other types of beds, refer to the list of key terms and definitions found below.

  • Futon – A Japanese style mattress that is quilted and commonly rolled out on the floor, or placed on a low wooden frame for sleeping. Futons are common around the world these days.
  • Waterbed – This is a type of rubber or plastic mattress that is filled with water, and placed on a sturdy frame for sleeping. Typically these units have temperature controls to adjust the temperature of the water, and make it more conducive to the individual.
  • Sofa Bed – A couch that can be converted into a bed by removing the seat cushions. It essentially folds up and is stored inside the sofa unit.
  • Blow Up Mattress – A plastic or rubber bed that can be inflated with an automatic pump. These units come in double, king, and queen sizes, and can be adjusted to suit different individuals.
  • Memory Foam Mattress – A dense mattress or pad that is created from high density foam, as opposed to coil springs. These beds are becoming more common, and adjust to the individual’s body curves to improve overall comfort.
  • King Size Bed – This is the largest bed size, and is available in various mattress types. Other bed sizes are queen, double, and single.

Each person prefers a different type of mattress to sleep on in order to get a full night's rest. Mattresses come in a variety of sizes like single, double, twin, queen, and king. There are even blow up types that make you pump air in or out to change the degree of firmness. One of the more popular types is the water bed. The water bed was invented in the early 19th century to supposedly prevent bed sores and increase the comfort of those confined to the frames. The mattresses fell out of manufacture due to lack of materials to make them, but resurfaced in the 1960s with the invention of vinyl. They became increasingly popular with the hippie crowd before evolving into the products they are today. Water beds are either contained by hard sided wooden frames or soft foam frames. Inexpensive products usually consist of one chamber, usually have wave displacement issues, and are often in need of repair. If you are willing to spend more, the more expensive models have more leak guards, dual or more chambers, are king sized, and require less maintenance. Most of these products are heated to supposedly give a more relaxing sleeping environment. The heat is controlled by thermostat. Most distributors of these products are also futon and sleeper sofa sales representatives. Futons, which can act as both sofas and mattresses, are specialty products, thus why they are lumped together with water beds. These distributors often sell accessories as well, like sheets or memory foam toppers.
