Important Terms about Water Heaters

If you find yourself having to buy or replace a water heater for your home or office, you may be uncertain how to proceed. Before you pick up the phone to call a dealer, we'll define several key terms you may encounter.

  • Water heater - An appliance, generally powered by gas or electricity, that heats water for domestic use. Water heaters come in two major types: those that use tanks and those that do not. Note that the common term "hot water heater" is considered redundant.
  • Storage water heater - A type that uses a large insulated tank in which water is continuously kept hot for ready use. The most commonly used kind of heater, it is usually powered by gas, electricity, or propane.
  • Tankless water heater - A type that heats water only when it is being used, dispensing with the need for a tank. Also called an instant or demand water heater. These can run on gas, electricity, or propane.
  • Solar water heaters - A relatively uncommon type that operates with energy collected from sunlight.
  • HVAC - Short for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. Water heater dealers are usually knowledgeable in many aspects of HVAC.
  • Energy Factor - Often shortened to EF, this is the numerical rating that refers to the efficiency of a water heater. The higher the number, the higher the efficiency.
  • Anode rod - A rod installed in a tank to prevent corrosion. Also called a sacrificial rod. They can be made from aluminum, magnesium, or zinc.
  • Drain pan - A pan sometimes used to collect liquid leaking from a tank.

Water heater dealers can be found in different parts of the United States. As you likely know, most all residential homes and commercial business buildings have hot water tanks or heaters in order to allow for both hot and cold water. While some of these units are electric, others function on propane gas. Typically licensed plumbing contractors or HVAC professionals handle the installation and maintenance of hot water heaters. In this day and age, there are a number of models and options available when it comes to these appliances or units. Among the different types of water heater units offered by dealers and distributors, there innovative energy efficient models that cost less to run, as well as heat pump systems that function off of solar panels that absorb energy from the sun. Individuals or businesses that are not interested in purchasing a water heater, do have the option to lease or rent one for a short time period. Typically a contract is involved with renting a gas or electric boiler tank or water heater. Many of these units are installed during the original construction of a home or office building. However, sometimes the owners wish to improve their central hot water tank or unit. This is sometimes because they do not heat enough liquid or water at once. You can learn a great deal more about safe water heaters systems for homes, as well as dealers and distributors of these appliances online. This does not take much time, and there are various official websites to assist you.
