Important Terms about Water Heaters

If you find yourself having to buy or replace a water heater for your home or office, you may be uncertain how to proceed. Before you pick up the phone to call a dealer, we'll define several key terms you may encounter.

  • Water heater - An appliance, generally powered by gas or electricity, that heats water for domestic use. Water heaters come in two major types: those that use tanks and those that do not. Note that the common term "hot water heater" is considered redundant.
  • Storage water heater - A type that uses a large insulated tank in which water is continuously kept hot for ready use. The most commonly used kind of heater, it is usually powered by gas, electricity, or propane.
  • Tankless water heater - A type that heats water only when it is being used, dispensing with the need for a tank. Also called an instant or demand water heater. These can run on gas, electricity, or propane.
  • Solar water heaters - A relatively uncommon type that operates with energy collected from sunlight.
  • HVAC - Short for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. Water heater dealers are usually knowledgeable in many aspects of HVAC.
  • Energy Factor - Often shortened to EF, this is the numerical rating that refers to the efficiency of a water heater. The higher the number, the higher the efficiency.
  • Anode rod - A rod installed in a tank to prevent corrosion. Also called a sacrificial rod. They can be made from aluminum, magnesium, or zinc.
  • Drain pan - A pan sometimes used to collect liquid leaking from a tank.
