Frequently Asked Questions About Water Pollution Control
The following questions are commonly asked about water pollution control:

What is wastewater?
Wastewater is water that has already been used, and in many cases is polluted with organic and chemical substances. Clearly, if this wastewater was allowed to reach the water supply or the surrounding environment, it would create pollution problems. For this reason, cities and states have rules and regulations on how to treat and control wastewater, and these processes are overseen by the EPA.

How is polluted water treated?
Polluted water enters into a sewer system where it flows to a treatment plant. Here, the water is run through a series of filters and collection bins where different types of bacteria slowly begin to consume the organic pollutants inside the water. If the water is not going to be reused by the city, but is instead sent to an outside water source, then no chemicals are added unless the water itself contains toxic traces of mercury or other pollutants. However, cities that do recycle their water will add chemicals at the end of the treatment process to ensure that all pollutants are removed before the water re-enters the water supply.

What are the biggest polluters of water?
Industrial factories are typically the biggest culprits of water pollution. For example, the wastewater that comes out of paper mills is notorious for having dangerously high levels of mercury. Before the EPA, this wastewater was often dumped into rivers and streams, but now there are regulations that state exactly how companies need to handle their wastewater. Failure to follow these rules can result in heavy fines.

Water pollution control companies can reduce the amount of contamination in ground water, lakes, rivers, and oceans. An agency will work to increase the quality while removing bacteria, chemicals, pathogens, and trash from the source. Prevention is very important, so they will use technology to practice techniques to reduce the amount of garbage and toxic waste that even gets into the system. To find a pollution control agency you can search online or look in a local phone book. You can call to make an appointment with an employee to have them take a look at the area with contamination so they can start the process of cleaning up. No matter what size problem it is, they will have ways to help the environment get rid of harmful chemicals. Oil spills, surface water with too much acidity, and other problems may need to have the help of various people in order for everything to return back to normal. If the job is too large for you to do on your own, finding a local agency that has the experience and knows techniques that work can be a lifesaver. If you meet with them once and decide that you do not like their ideas or don't feel comfortable working with them you can try and find another company in the area. Go over how much they charge for their services and compare to other businesses to see what a fair price is for this type of service. If the situation calls for immediate action you may not have time to shop around but a few simple calls can help you decide who you want to hire.
