Important Water Purification and Filtration Equipment Terminology

Water purification and filtration is an essential process for making H20 that is safe to drink. Using the correct filter unit and system, as well as other equipment, can have an important impact on the quality and overall process of water purification. Here are some important water equipment terms to familiarize yourself with.

  • Filter - In order to properly clean the water for drinking and other uses, the water needs to pass through a filter. Filters are made of different materials, like mesh or charcoal, but all act as a physical barrier that allows water to pass through while catching harmful contaminates. Some filters can be for residential use and attached to a tap in the home.
  • Purification - Some chemicals can be added to water to sterilize and purify it to drinking or cleaning standards. These chemicals can remove harmful contaminates. In commercial uses it may be necessary to give water treatment before using.
  • Reverse Osmosis - Reverse osmosis is a process in which molecules are removed from water. It is a type of purification and filtration process that rids water of harmful contaminants, particles and germs. Reverse osmosis ensures that water is drinkable and consumable.
  • Treatment Plant - A facility designated for processing drinkable water, by the removal of contaminants from wastewater and household sewage. Large equipment and devices clean the water into a more premium liquid that is available for consumption. Local cities and counties can sometimes have such plants for home and office use.

Most water is purified and filtered for the purpose of consuming it, however, water is also processed for use in medical, industrial and chemical applications. Different units and processing systems are needed for the various intended uses of the water.

Water is one of the most basic needs for life. Pure, clean water is essential to maintain good health, strong teeth, and proper personal hygiene. Water purification systems use filters or other processes to remove bad or unwanted particles from water for commercial and residential use. Filters present a physical barrier which prevents pathogens, bacteria, and minerals from passing through, while allowing the water to flow. Other means of filtration and purification include subjecting water to chemical or biological treatments, often used by campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Reverse osmosis is a purification method used to remove large particles from water by forcing the water or other liquid under high pressure to move through a material with holes smaller than the particles which need to be removed. One use of reverse osmosis is desalination, or the removal of salt from a liquid, such as seawater. Water purification and filtration equipment is available in a wide range of capacities and costs to be used in the home or office. A basic home filter can be attached to the tap or faucet and can purify water as it moves through the filter as needed. Other systems store pure water to be used only when needed. Premium filtration equipment makes use of the latest technology and can be more expensive. A good local water treatment store or company should be able to provide you with information about systems available from different manufacturers and distributors. They may also sell supplies and other equipment to keep your water pure, fresh, clean, and healthy.
