Water Well Drilling and Pump Contracting Terms

Many people choose an alternative way of bringing safe, fresh water into their homes to lower utility costs. Drilling a water well near their residence is one common way of doing this. A contractor will provide most of the equipment, evaluation and installation of the well for you. They also work to integrate the new addition with existing plumbing systems and put in any necessary new plumbing mechanisms. Water well and pump contractors are also involved in the long term maintenance and repair of these structures. If you are looking to use one of these service providers, you may find the following list of key terms helpful for your search.

  • Aquifer – This is the underground reserve that many of these systems tap into. Some geographical maps have known aquifers listed, while others may be found by surveying. If the aquifer is deep, a pump may need to be put in to bring the resource up to the surface.
  • Survey – The process of evaluating the surrounding geographical area for accessible sources of water. A thorough study of climate patterns, seasonal shifts and existing digging sites are all important aspects of this step.
  • Artesian Aquifer – A confined aquifer that is under pressure from nearby impermeable rocks. After being drilled into, the natural force can be high enough to bring the supply to the surface without the need for a pump.
  • Deep Drainage – Also called a recharge area, this process is where rain or surface run-off seeps down below plant roots to the water table.
  • Surface Seal – This is where a large circular area is dug to a predetermined depth before continuing a smaller hole down. This prevents sediment from entering or collapsing in on the formation and keeps it from being contaminated. This lowers the need for repairs on the formation.

When water wells need to be drilled, or repairs need to be made to pumps, contractors skilled in these areas are called in for the job. They can install pumps of all kinds, from high pressure and hydraulic, to hand and electrical. They can also excavate the ground to install water well systems, which can comprise filters, tanks, and hoses. Water wells and pumps are generally used to ensure safe drinking water, and working pipe systems to distribute water for all purposes for a home or business. Many homes and businesses are on city water, but many people still have water wells on their property. Sometimes these wells break down and need repair, or require general maintenance over time. Contractors should be licensed and insured in the state or states that they operate in. They are trained in volume quality and proper drilling depth. Services that water well drilling and pump contractors may offer consumers are: 24-hour availability, repair, installation, free estimates, and sales. Some may focus on residential jobs, while others take on larger industrial and commercial projects. Contractors in this field should have experience working with a variety of well types, such as geothermal and artesian. From water filtration and well drilling, to electrical pump repair and equipment system monitoring, such contractors can fill a variety of roles for customers in need. Before the advent of municipal water supplies, wells were the primary mode of obtaining water for cooking, cleaning, and washing. Over the years, many communities have switched residents to city or town water systems for treatment and supply, but those living in more rural areas still rely on wells for their water supply. Consumers can look to the Internet to find listings of licensed contractors in their area that offer the company services and equipment they need.
