Important Water Well Drilling and Service Terms

Water wells have been drilled all over the world to accommodate the needs of numerous communities, businesses, and industrial facilities with plumbing and water heating. These wells are often equipped with pumps, self plumbing or filtration systems, and even heating elements, if needed.   • Piezometer – This is a device that is used to measure pore water pressure. It helps contractors with measuring the location of water tables, and can be used to collect samples of water as well.
  • Cable Tool Drilling – Also known as percussion drilling, this method uses a weighted string of drilling tools. These tools are positioned on a hoisting cable, and are raised and dropped repeatedly. The impact crushes obstructing materials in order for a hole to be created.
  • Turbidity – This refers to the portion of particles or sediment that is found suspended in liquid. This term applies to both water and oil wells that are excavated. Sometimes pumps and filters are used to remove this sediment.
  • Aquifer – An underground layer of gravel, earth, or porous stone. An aquifer yields water is various volumes or quantities. This water is often safer to use since it is hidden from many pollutants.
  • Dual Rotary Drilling – This is done by a rig with a lower rotary drive. This method often involves a drag bit, hammer, or rolling cone bit that penetrates rock and earth. A compressor is used to vacuum out debris and cuttings during the drilling process.
