Common Wedding Photography Terms

One of the most important parts of your wedding is the photographer. Hiring a professional to shoot your big day can help ensure you will have a beautiful album. Wedding photographers are a dime a dozen nowadays so it is essential to find one that has the talent and experience for the job. When looking into your options, knowing the following key terms may be helpful.

  • Portrait – A picture that is taken up close so that the subject’s face is the main focal point. Having a professional behind the camera will make sure you have multiple prints that truly show the happiness in your eyes and smile.
  • Candid – A snapshot of your beautiful day. These pictures that not planned out by wedding photographers and are usually taken without the subject knowing. These pictures are great to have because the people in them will look more natural. Most people forget to capture non-posed moments of the wedding and reception for their album.
  • Composition – The way a photographer arranges a image. The elements of the wedding photo can include the main subject, such as the bride, along with the background and supporting elements like the bouquet.
  • Print – A image that is printed on paper, usually from a negative. Because digital photography allows the manufacturing of prints to be cheaper and quicker, many wedding photographers have stopped using traditional film. Another advantage of digital photography is that you can see the wedding photographs right away and can take another if it is not beautiful.
  • Ambient Light – This term can either be used to describe a composition where the subject is completely bathed in light or the natural light in an image that was not supplied or created by the person shooting the picture.
