Important Welding Equipment Terms

Welding equipment is used in a variety of industrial applications. Tools are available both for home use and for large-scale manufacturing. From time to time, welding equipment may require repairs and maintenance to keep it in good, working order. The following are a few important welding equipment repair terms to be familiar with when looking for a shop to work on your machines.

  • MIG – MIG stands for metal inert gas, and is a type of welding process. In this process, filler metal in wire form is fed to an area, which is protected by the metal inert gas. This is a very fast method of welding and involves less heat build up that other methods.
  • Plasma Cutters – Plasma cutters are a type of equipment are used to quickly and precisely cut metal without creating excessive heat. Plasma cutting machines convert gas into a plasma state in which it is hot enough to cut through metals like steel by melting them.
  • Soldering – Soldering is a method of joining to metal objects together by using a filler metal in between them. The two metal objects being joined are not melted themselves, but joined by the filler metal, which has a lower melting point. Soldering is typically done at lower temperatures than welding and may be completed with tools like torches.
  • Arc Welding – Arc welding equipment uses an electric arc to create the heat needed to bond metal pieces together. During arc welding, the area being welded is typically shielded by some sort of gas. Machines use but direct and alternating electrical currents for arc welding.
  • Gas Welding – Gas welding tools use the heat from burning gasses to join metal parts together. Torches are a common piece of equipment used for gas welding, as well as other processes like cutting and soldering.

Welding equipment undergoes lots of use, so it’s no surprise it needs repairing every now and then. Welding, the process by which metals are joined by applying heat, requires the proper equipment to administer that heat. This equipment includes torches, frames, tubes, nozzles, and insulators. It uses lasers and direct flame to join metals together, and may require special tools to repair it when needed. Welders use welding equipment, machines, tools, and accessories to operate in industrial factory plants, small shop settings, and even underwater. Occasionally, parts such as valves need to be replaced. Repair technicians skilled in this area can provide this service, along with repair of flow meters, gas pressure regulators, leak testing equipment, plasma cutters, and oxy-acetylene torches. Welding apparatus repair takes a special skill. Qualified technicians spend years learning how to fix anything from welding and brazing tips to switches and cables. Underwater welding requires further specialized training, as this involves knowledge of scuba diving as well. Some welding equipment repair experts work in a small workshop connected to their home, while others work for a large company, perhaps in a factory. Proper safety equipment and tools are required when fixing torches and machines or replacing parts. Safety equipment includes face masks, gloves, and flame-resistant apparel. Welding dates back further than blacksmithing, to the Bronze Age when welders made small gold circular boxes via pressure welding. Blacksmiths came about in the Middle Ages, which involved hammering iron into various shapes. The 19th century saw the modern age of welding as we know it today.
