Wheel Chairs and Scooters Terms to Know

Personal mobility signifies independence in our society. When one loses the ability to walk, whether through injury or disease, it becomes necessary to rely on a different way in which to get around. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of the world of personal mobility, it's important to understand the terminology associated with the different types of transportation. Below are several terms to familiarize oneself with if in the market for personal mobility devices.

  • Wheel Chair - A chair mounted on large, hard rubber wheels for use by one who is sick or disabled and is unable to walk. Wheel chair can be powered manually, or with an electric, battery powered motor. Traditional wheel chairs are easily folded in order to make them more portable.
  • Beach Chair - A beach accessible wheel chair on which four over sized tires are mounted. It is manufactured from heavy duty PVC and non-corroding hardware. An adjustable umbrella typically comes standard, but is also available as an accessory.
  • Gait Trainer - A four wheeled walker type device in which the patient, usually a child, is strapped in the standing position. The device assists with teaching children, and sometimes adults, how to walk properly.
  • Scooter - A two, three, or four wheeled vehicle used primarily to transport one who is unable to walk. The scooter's motor may be electric or gas powered. They are available both new and used on the market. Scooters are much heavier and less portable than wheelchairs.
  • Vehicle Lift - A machine by which a wheelchair or an electric personal mobility scooter is lifted into a van or other vehicle.

Wheelchairs and scooters are used on a daily basis by many adults and children all over the world. The majority of these chairs are motorized or electrically powered and several others are manually operated. Wheelchairs are all about getting from place to place through mobility. These handy devices date back to the 1930s, and are generally used by individuals who are paralyzed from the neck down or waist down. They are also used by some elderly men and women, as well as those who are afflicted with various injuries and medical conditions. Through modern technology wheelchairs and scooters have rapidly advanced over the years. There are a number of accessories and additions designed for these mobility devices at this point. Typically when someone uses a wheelchair, a lift is added to the back of their motor vehicle for convenience. Although these wheelchairs are often not cheap to purchase, they are necessary in order for those with disabilities to travel in. Sometimes wheelchairs and scooters require general maintenance and repairs. Fortunately there are company and manufacturer locations that assist with this. Most wheelchairs that you can buy these days can be personalized, and operated by hand. It is important to care for these portable scooters and chairs so they operate well for years to come, regardless of whether they are manual or motorized. If you need additional information and specifics on gas scooters, electrically powered wheelchairs, and other adjustable mobility devices, it is helpful to locate a dealer in your area or region. This way you can contact them with any questions and concerns you may have.
