Wheel Chairs and Scooters Terms to Know

Personal mobility signifies independence in our society. When one loses the ability to walk, whether through injury or disease, it becomes necessary to rely on a different way in which to get around. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of the world of personal mobility, it's important to understand the terminology associated with the different types of transportation. Below are several terms to familiarize oneself with if in the market for personal mobility devices.

  • Wheel Chair - A chair mounted on large, hard rubber wheels for use by one who is sick or disabled and is unable to walk. Wheel chair can be powered manually, or with an electric, battery powered motor. Traditional wheel chairs are easily folded in order to make them more portable.
  • Beach Chair - A beach accessible wheel chair on which four over sized tires are mounted. It is manufactured from heavy duty PVC and non-corroding hardware. An adjustable umbrella typically comes standard, but is also available as an accessory.
  • Gait Trainer - A four wheeled walker type device in which the patient, usually a child, is strapped in the standing position. The device assists with teaching children, and sometimes adults, how to walk properly.
  • Scooter - A two, three, or four wheeled vehicle used primarily to transport one who is unable to walk. The scooter's motor may be electric or gas powered. They are available both new and used on the market. Scooters are much heavier and less portable than wheelchairs.
  • Vehicle Lift - A machine by which a wheelchair or an electric personal mobility scooter is lifted into a van or other vehicle.
