Wheel and Wheel Covers Terms to Know

Having the proper sized tires and coverings, such as rims and hubcaps, is an important part of keeping your car safe on the road. Driving on used bald tires in the rain can result in bad skidding accidents. Likewise, driving on tires that are too small, or rims that are too big can result in accidents due to handling. Below are some common terms used for wheels and wheel covers.

  • All Season Tires – As their name suggests, these tires claim to have decent handling in dry, wet and icy conditions. They are usually good for areas that are not too dry and do not receive large amounts of snowfall.
  • Snow Tires – Tires meant for winter driving. They have extra large traction and studs to help the car stay on the road during snowstorms. For extra control on the road you can even add tire chains for an even better grip of the road.
  • Trailer Tires – A special type of heavy duty tire meant for hauling heavy loads in a trailer. Just like the tires of a passenger car, a trailer's tires need to be maintained and under no circumstances should you drive a trailer on bald tires.
  • Rim – The metal part of the car that turns the tire. Rims come in a variety of styles, from black steel to spotless chrome. They can also come in different sizes, from seventy inches to twenty four inches. Buying rims that are the wrong size for your car often results in them having to be replaced.
  • Hubcap – A centerpiece that fits over the middle of the rim and protects the lug nuts. Like rims, these can come in different colors and can be made of aluminum, steel or chrome.

Wheels are a necessary part of all vehicles, along with wheelchairs, bicycles, and scooters. Therefore, many automotive shops and stores specialize in wheels and the coverings that encase them, such as replica hub caps and spinners. Some of these accessories are meant to add a bit of decorative flair to a car, while others come standard from the manufacturer and are quite plain. Most automotive or auto body repair shops stock and install wheels and their covers. Some even have a used wheel cover selection for those who can't afford new ones. Another great place to check for cheap, used metallic hub caps and rims is at a junk yard. This is especially useful for those looking to outfit their cars on a budget. There's a big difference in the size of wheels. They vary from model to model. That's why it's important to ensure the covers you select fit properly over your car's or truck's factory wheels. If not, they could fall off if too loose or do some major damage to the wheel if too tight. Wheels and covers are also seasonal. Alloy wheels are great in summer, while steel ones are ideal for winter. Dealerships are another place to pick up some decorative aluminum wheel covers, center caps, chrome and wire wheel covers, and pressed steel covers. Many automobile mechanics specialize in the latest wheel covers, from dubs and spinners to trim and OEM wheel covers. They'll often provide custom work for those customers who want something unique for their hot rod, for example. Large auto super centers and manufacturers, including those online, may sell lots more than just decorative wheels and covers. They may also sell transmissions, radiators, engines, headlights, and taillights. This gives the customer a spectrum of choices when facing automotive remodels or repairs.
