Common Wicker Furniture Terms

Different materials are used in the creation of wicker furniture, and certain types of wicker furniture are commonplace in most stores. Whether you are shopping for your bedroom or your porch, wicker furniture shopping is easier once you are familiar with a few of the key terms.

  • Adirondack chair – An Adirondack chair traditionally has a straight seat and back and large arms, though modern Adirondack chairs have a curved back and more form-fitted seating. The entire chair is slanted because it was developed in mountainous region. These chairs are most common on porches or patios.
  • Bamboo – Bamboo is a member of the true grass family and is used in the crafting of many finished goods, including furniture. Since it is hollow and brittle it is typically used only for trims on wicker furniture pieces.
  • Papasan chair – A papasan chair is a bowl-shaped chair placed on top of a pedestal-like stand. The bowl portion is not typically attached to the stand, which allows for adjustment. Papasan chairs have a thick cushion, often removable, over the entire interior of the bowl. Since it possesses a cloth cushion, this piece of furniture would be most appropriate in a bedroom or living room rather than outdoors.
  • Rattan – Rattan is a relative of the tropical palm tree and is used in the crafting of finished goods. Since rattan retains a shape indefinitely after it is steamed and dried, it is used often as a wicker furniture frame.
  • Resin Wicker – Resin wicker looks a lot like rattan products, but is actually formed with a man-made material. This material is perfect for patios or lawns because it can better withstand outdoor conditions.

Wicker furniture is commonly seen in America, and is often used by residential homeowners. As a matter of fact, you can generally see all kinds of wicker patio furniture and bedroom furnishings in retail stores. This industry actually dates all the way back to the 1850s, and has grown significantly since then. While there are types of wicker crafted from slender, flexible twigs and branches, there are also types created from hard woven fibers. It is common these days to see sofas and outdoor furniture made from all weather resins. While there are certainly antique wicker chairs, tables, and bedroom furnishings, there are plenty of contemporary products in this market as well. Some of these products include porch chairs crafted from rattan woods, as well as lawn furnishings made from reeds of bamboo. As you may have noticed, all weather wicker furnishings are popular at tropical beaches and around outdoor swimming pools in warm regions. Furthermore, many residential homeowners use modern wicker patio furniture on their decks and in their indoor dining rooms. While some of these contemporary outdoor furnishings are cheap, others are designer brands that cost more. At this point, countless bedroom and patio sets made from these materials are sold in local stores, as well as online. You can learn more about outdoor benches, wicker headboards, contemporary shelves made from rattan wood, and antique sofas online. This is also an easy way to get more information and details on how to properly care for these patio items and indoor furnishings.
