Important Terms for Wine Makers about Equipment & Supplies

Wine making is a popular hobby and business that has grown substantially in the last ten years. A significant percentage of the world's grape supply is dedicated to wine fermentation. Vineyards of all sizes brew wine using home made kits and easily assembled equipment. With an inexpensive set up and an original recipe, you can make your own wine in a single season. Before you ferment your grapes, or even plant your first vines, you need to learn a few things about the process. Oenology and fermentation are hard sciences at their core. As such, the production of wine comes with a large vocabulary of esoteric jargon. Consider these five important terms for wine makers about fermentation equipment and supplies.

  • Varietal - American wines are all named by the type of grape used in the fermentation process. Whether you set out to brew white or red, the product will depend on the breed of grape you plant in your vineyard. Popular red varietals include pinot noir and cabernet. The most popular white varietal is chardonnay.
  • Yeast - These microscopic organisms essentially eat sugar and excrete alcohol. They are critical in any fermentation process. Because the yeast directly convert sugar into alcohol, the higher the sugar content of your grapes, the higher your eventual alcohol content will be.
  • Custom Label - Home brewers that want to bring their wine supply to market must label their bottles with a vineyard name and varietal. Fancier wines are more specific about the location of the grapes used in the bottle.
  • Fermentation Recipe - The balance of additives, grapes, water and yeast in each bottle of wine. Create your own innovative recipe by playing with traditional ratios.
  • Press - Mechanical tool that extracts the juice from your grape harvest.
