important Wireless Communications Terms

Developments in technology are rapidly changing the way that we are able to communicate. Wireless communications systems make it easier and faster for people to exchange information and ideas from any location. Familiarity with key terms about wireless communication can be very useful in navigating through the latest technology. Below you there is a list of the most popular and useful terms to review.

  • WLAN - Wireless local area network. A WLAN allows multiple devices, such as computers, mobile phones, or printers, to connect to one another without the use of cables. These networks also typically allow devices to connect to the internet.
  • Broadband - A general term for high speed internet. Nearly all wireless internet signals provide a broadband connection.
  • 3G/4G - Third or forth generation cellular wireless systems. Each new generation offers higher speeds for data transfer. 3G and 4G offer the speeds which are necessary for smart phones.
  • Mobile Hot Spot - A cell phone or other small device which can establish a wireless internet signal. They can be used to set up an access point anywhere that a cell phone has a clear 3G or 4G signal. Other devices, such as laptops, can then connect to the internet through this hot spot.
  • Router - A piece of equipment typically used to allow multiple computers to connect to the internet through a single modem. The router plugs into the modem, and can then be used to broadcast a wireless signal.
  • Wireless USB Adapter - A device which plugs into the USB drive of a computer to allow for connection to a wireless internet signal. These are useful for older computers which do not have a built in wireless card.

Wireless communications essentially refers to the transfer of information from one point to another, but without the use of wires, or enhanced electrical conductors. This technology has really expanded in the last 20 years, and is commonly seen in most parts of the world today. Most people recognize the two most prominent forms of wireless communication as the internet, and mobile or cellular phones. The networks for these communication systems are constantly growing in order to suit all locations in the United States. It is clear that PDA systems, GPS devices, and wireless mouse and keyboard hardware, as well as satellite television, are all part of wireless communication these days. While PDA devices assist people with keeping track of personal information and appointments, GPS systems help you navigate and find specific addresses. Wireless cell phones now offer all kinds of media and long distance coverage if you have the right carrier or plan for it. As far as broadband internet goes, modems now allow for wireless connection as long as you are within the right distance from the modem device so you can get a network signal. This type of wireless communication technology is literally changing all the time, and improving to make things more convenient. While you can speak with your mobile phone or internet provider to learn more about wireless communications, you can also access the web to get more information. In fact, there is ample free data online regarding mobile phone headsets, high-speed broadband internet connections, and satellite television plans.
