Wireless Phone Service Terminology

Many people rely upon wireless phone services as their only means of communication with others. Since a compact cell phone can be carried at all times, this is more convenient than relying on landlines. These wireless devices even offer features like reverse lookup, internet access, and headset attachments. Most cell phones can be locked and unlocked by the owner of the phone as well, which is great for security measures. Here are a few terms that apply to wireless phone services.

  • USB – This is also known as universal serial bus, and it is essentially a connection option for computer peripheral devices. Many cell phones with charger cords can be charged once plugged into a computer USB port, and data can be exchanged quickly.
  • VoIP – Commonly used in office and business settings, this is voice over internet protocol. It is a communications protocol that enables telephonic communication via the internet. VoIP is sometimes used for conferences and business meetings.
  • Reverse Lookup – This refers to a feature on cell phones, which allows the user to lookup a number that calls. For instance, if the number is unknown, and no name is revealed, it can often be looked up and identified by this service.
  • Prepaid Minutes – Although many wireless phone users have a monthly service plan and provider, there are also cell phones available with no plan or contract. Prepaid minutes can be purchased, and this allows the user to buy a certain number of minutes or hours for a specific amount of money.
  • Bluetooth – An open wireless technology that is used for exchanging data over short distances from motor vehicles, computers, and other mobile devices. Bluetooth allows you to create personal networks with high security that cannot be accessed or unlocked by outsiders.

Wireless phone services often include more than cell phone reception. Many of today's plans include mobile wi fi that allows customers to access the internet via 3g broadband connections. Some cell phone plans, however, still focus on wireless phone services instead of high speed internet access. It is, therefore, important for consumers to learn about the types of options available to them. Some discount carriers focus on providing no frills communication options that are cheaper than complicated networks that use wi fi connections. Cheap plans often include pre paid calling options and low rates for those who want contracts that only allow calls. More advanced options, however, use satellites to turn mobile devices into wi fi hot spots. These options might be cheaper than cable or DSL connections at home. Plus, customers have the option to connect to the network via satellite wherever they are. Many network providers also sell a variety of devices. While you might be able to make a call with an old device, chances are that you need a more recent model to access the internet. Installing software for 3g service can also improve ease of access. The results, however, often depend on the type of device and deal you get from your phone and ISP company. You can compare the rates and plans offered in your area by searching the internet for providers that operate in your region. This will help you compare discount options as well as those that offer the latest services for high tech mobile devices that use high speed connections to download video and audio, send emails, and make calls.
