The Various Types of Fences

Everyone has a need for boundaries and privacy, especially around their home. Having a nice wood fence surrounding your house offers both. Many "Do-It-Yourselfers" investigate their topic before jumping in, and so it is important that if you're going to build a fence or have someone else build it for you that you know a bit about the various types of fences.

  • Aluminum Fence - This type of fence, constructed of slender posts spaced evenly apart, is good for surrounding a pool as the posts are hard to climb and can be spaced so a child can not get through. Many put electric aluminum fences in front of their house to keep animals in. The gate for this fence needs to match the material.
  • Wood Fence - This type of fence, made of wooden pickets, is architecturally appealing and provides a good privacy barrier. Most are about 6 ft. tall, but some prefer 8 ft. fences for extra sound protection along busy roads. Keep in mind that the posts for a wood fence are installed with concrete and placed 18-24 inches into the ground. Also, wooden gates need attention every few years if they are rained on heavily as the wood will expand the hinges.
  • Chain-link Fence - This type of fence, usually constructed from steel, has several advantages in areas where animals are kept or where privacy is not an issue. They tend to be shorter fences with a criss-cross pattern and some manufacturers coat the steel with vinyl. It is very easy to electrify a chain-link fence.
  • Wrought Iron Fence - This is perhaps the most decorative of fences and is usually constructed out of links or decorative posts. Often individuals will use a wrought iron fence to surround gardens and will attach a lattice on which their plant may grow.

Though fences were once used primarily for security, modern homeowners are opting to install fences for more varied reasons. Houses with wooden picket fences have long been associated with a sense Americana, and this look, along with other more contemporary designs, are options for maintaining privacy and delineating yard divisions. Before building a fence around your pool, garden or yard, there are a number of different fencing options from which homeowners may choose. While wooden fences are quaint options that provide a great deal of privacy, they are not the only options on the market. Wrought iron models are an imposing choice, and look best when paired with large manor or Tudor houses. Aluminum or wire chain link fences offer little in the way of privacy, but offer superior security to businesses or those with a lot of property which must be guarded. Invisible electric fences are a good way of keeping pets confined to a property without worrying about the expensive repairs that come with more traditional fencing options. A local fence installation company is often the best source of information on the fence that is best suited for your property. In addition to providing cost estimates on options from chain link to electric fences, they are equipped to talk about local zoning regulations. Such regulations can dictate the placement of gates, and any gate locks that may be required. They can also regulate the height of the panels or lattice that may be used, and the distance between posts. They also provide information on the upkeep required for outdoor wood or vinyl fencing, hinges doors and other fixtures. Whether installing fencing in the front or back of a home, consulting with a professional installation company can help you select the type that most suits your lifestyle and aesthetic.
