Refinishing wood, either as part of maintenance or after repairs, is thus an important task. A woodworker's desk is equipped with clamps and bolts for securing pieces. Lathes are used to turn wood, most often for making wooden bowls or banisters. Companies that supply wood to workers often provide exotic hardwoods and interesting materials. At the other extreme, plywood is used as a cheap alternative to true wood. Many craftsmen do custom jobs, such as specific furniture designs.
