Yoga Instruction Terminology

Yoga is a type of low impact, meditation-focused exercise that is linked to breathing. Yoga is suitable for all types of people, including the elderly and pregnant women. Many gyms and recreational centers offer yoga instruction classes with highly qualified instructors who are used to working with people of varying degrees of fitness. All a person needs to attend a yoga class is a yoga mat and bendable, breathable clothing. Since the yoga movements and positions will take place on the mat, make sure the mat is comfortable. Listed below are some common terms associated with yoga.

  • Hatha Yoga – This yoga is meant to represent opposite energies, such as hot and cold, or water and fire. It is performed using structured breathing and maintaining poses that are of varying degrees of difficultly.
  • Bikram Yoga – A type of yoga advocated by Bikram Choudhoury, also called hot yoga because the exercises of often done in hot rooms or studios where the temperatures are kept at 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Classes last for exactly 90 minutes and consist of maintained several postures.
  • Kundalini Yoga – Perhaps one of the most misunderstood yoga, Kundalini yoga is a yoga that focuses on breathing and raising awareness. It takes strict training to be adapt at Kundalini yoga, which needs complete relaxation of all body parts. It does not focus so much on different postures and poses as it does on breathing.
  • Ashtanga Yoga – Also called Raja Yoga, this type of yoga is linked to Hatha yoga. While Hatha yoga requires different poses, Raja yoga focuses on breathing and meditation to obtain liberation.
