When people want to relax, they often turn to yoga. Yoga is comprised of exercises that promote control of the body and mind. This Hindu discipline focuses on training the consciousness for a state of perfect spiritual insight. People interested in learning this gentle form of exercise can take yoga instruction, often offered at fitness centers and independent facilities such as yoga studios. Yoga is made up of varying positions, poses, breathing exercises, meditation, and muscle stretches. The focus is on teaching balance and achieving personal tranquility through a system of poses and postures, such as inversions, core strengthening poses, twists, and standing yoga poses. The origins of pre-classical yoga can be traced back to the Upanishads, which were written between 1000-5000 BC. But exact dates and origins are largely unknown. This spiritual ritual involves a mat, the appropriate clothing, and some intense concentration. Looking for a yoga instruction class near you? Look in the phone book for ads, or check fitness center or yoga studio listings on the Internet. Some classes are even offered free of charge at senior centers and schools. Yoga focuses on postural alignment of the spine and other bodily components. Instructors skilled in this art form can teach students how yoga and Buddhism can work together, along with varying levels of meditations and poses to practice. The great thing about yoga is it can be done anywhere. So once you learn the basics, you can practice the art of yoga at home and experience its health and wellness benefits immediately. Some yoga instructors offer prenatal classes for pregnant women. Classes range from beginner to advanced, and some classes are offered on spiritual retreats. The workout level you choose depends on your ability and personal preferences.
