Can German Shepherds Be Good House Dogs?

Hi. Were moving to town soon and currently we live in the country
And I have a German Shepherd. Last night I was thinking about him being a house dog. Can german shepherds be good house dogs? and If so I need some Ideas to convince my parents he can be a good one. You know how some parents are, they dont want dogs in the house and If he isnt in the house he would be put in a fence, poor him....and yes I understand that I will have to toilet train him and get him used to the new enviroment. Need help, i live in Texas in the north- eastern area.

Yes they can be good house dogs. There are 2 extremely important points;

1) you've got to understand that they shed constantly and due to their think coat, yo'll be living with hair everywhere inside your home. Vacuming daily is the only way to reduce the hair that accumulates. It's tuff to deal with and you've got to be committed if you want a clean environment.

2) The dog will require outside time at least twice per day. A walk won't be enough. Shepards require "off leash" time. You'll have to find a park that will allow you to bring him in off lease and you have to develope and exercise program for him.

Good luck

I have a German Shepherd and he stays in the house all the time. Mike is right the hair that accumulates from him is unbelieveable, even vacuuming everyday it is hard to control. He is 2 years old and we take him on a walk everyday for about half an hour. We also have a 20 foot retractable leash that we put him on in the yard so that he can run a bit. We also take him with us if there is a pool where we are going, he LOVES to swim and it is great exercise for him. We toss a tennis ball around in the house and he sleeps in our bed. He makes a wonderful house dog, I wouldn't keep him in a yard even if I could, I love having him right here next to me. Also with him living in the house I feel it makes him more protective of his home. He works just fine for us as a house dog, we wouldn't have it any other way.
