Farm equipment parts are sold both wholesale and retail. Repairs are generally offered by specialists, although some large farms may handle all of their own repairs.
Parts companies may specialize in specific types of equipment. Some may provide parts and repairs only for tractors, others for combines or other heavy machines. Some may provide parts for vintage and classic tractors for farm machinery.
In some cases, they may also sell parts for smaller equipment, such as ride on lawn mowers, that may be used by private individuals. However, for the most part, they focus only on agricultural machinery. Used parts may be sold, which are generally cheaper, and in some cases the same company may also sell used equipment such as tractors, tillers or backhoes. Tires are, of course, a major area of business and some businesses may specialize in those alone.
Sales of parts direct to the general public generally takes place through agricultural shops. In some cases, parts for smaller machines may be available in garden centers.
Repairs may include inspection and repairs of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. These are fairly specialized, and include such things as tracking down leaks and ensuring appropriate lubrication is used. Engine repairs are also a large area of business. Mechanics generally specialize in heavy machinery and seldom also do cars and small vehicles.
Larger farms may handle their own repairs, especially in basic areas such as oil changes and tire replacement. In these cases, a shop is present on the farm premises. However, they still need to purchase the needed parts and supplies, often direct from a wholesaler.
