What Are Black Roses?

You’ve probably seen them: roses with petals as black as a starless night. Are they natural? Who uses them? Where can I get them? Read on to find out!
Black Roses

Black roses do not actually grow on rose bushes. Florists produce black roses by either taking roses that are already a dark red and putting black food dye in their water to make the petals even darker, or by spraying a tint onto the petals themselves. The process of tinting roses produces black petals darker and more striking than feeding the rose black food dye. The closest thing to a black rose that grows in nature is the bacarra rose: a dark red rose with petals whose lining is even darker than the rest of the petal.

There is no official symbolism associated with the black rose. Rather, they are an item which different groups have adopted and imbued with different meanings. To some, the black rose is a symbol of death. To others, it is a symbol of rebirth: the old self dying to make way for a new self to emerge. Political organizations ranging from anarchists to nationalist movements have adopted the symbol of the black rose at various points in history.

Gothic Fantasy

If you are looking to give a black rose as a romantic gesture, then the girl has to connect the rose to some greater significance. Otherwise, your gift could rub her the wrong way even if you think it’s a nice gesture. Girls who are into fantasy literature, which employs supernatural symbolism and themes, or girls who enjoy gothic styles would probably be the most receptive to a black rose as a gesture of love. But, if you are sure that someone would like one, you should go ahead and get her one at your local florist.

Alternate Uses

One of the more common uses for black roses are as a kind of gag-gift for birthdays. This taps into the death motifs associated with black roses, and is frequently used as a light hearted way of teasing someone entering middle age. They are also very popular props for Halloween parties and decorations.

Getting a Black Rose

Florists do not generally carry black roses in stock. The process of creating them is labor intensive, and there is generally not a lot of demand for black roses. The one exception is around Halloween, when some florists will create a limited number of black roses for walk-in customers. Some florists will, however, accept special orders for black roses.
