7 Roofing Supplies You Must Have

Before you can get started on your roof job, you need to acquire the following supplies, as they'll help you finish the job quickly and professionally.
Supplies You Must Have
1

Hammer and Nails

You’ll need a hammer, nails, and perhaps even a nail gun if it suits you. Nail guns provide speed manual hammering usually doesn’t. However, nail guns tend to penetrate the surface at various depths, meaning you’ll need to hammer in nails every now and then.
2

Felt & Underlayment

Before you can do anything, you need to lay your felt. This is what you place the shingle to when shingling your roof, and it’s what protects the actual wood of your roof.
3

Roof Coatings

This heavy-duty coating is usually an all weather roof cement for a variety of materials, including cement, tiles, shingle, and plastic. Coating will usually come in a 4.75 gallon, but other quantities are available as well. This is used to seal cracks, repair imperfections, and improve weathered roofing.
4

Safety Equipment

Safety is the number one concern when roofing. A small investment certainly outweighs a hospital bill, so consider picking up a few things. You can usually find everything you need packaged into a safety kit, which includes a safety harness, rope, mount, and more.
5

Shingle Remover

You can find specific tools designed to lift shingle, or you can even use a basic shovel if you’re limited on resources. The nice thing about these specialty tools is they provide additional function; instead of merely lifting the shingle up off the rood, the shingle remover also has teeth on the end to catch and pry up nails, which all need to come up out of the roof if you’re re-shingling, as they provide a hazard to anyone walking on the roof.
6

Tarp

You’ll need one of these to lay around your dumpster, as it will help you clean up the shingle that missed the dumpster throughout the day.
7

Plywood

This is nice to have on hand, as you may need to repair any damaged wood under the underlayment.
