Physical therapists educated in the United States are required to have graduated from university or college programs at a masters or doctorate level. Physical therapists are licensed in all 50 states and are required to have graduated from an accredited program and passed a national examination. Physical therapists may supervise and delegate selected tasks or procedures to others such as a physical therapy assistant, however, the physical therapist bears ultimate responsibility for the care of each patient. Physical therapist assistants are trained on the job; however most earn an associate degree from an accredited physical therapist assistant program. Not all States require licensure or registration in order for the physical therapist assistant to practice. The States that require licensure stipulate specific educational and examination criteria.
