How to Choose Dog & Cat Food
--Types of Dog & Cat Food-- Most retail dog food can be categorized into three types, based on their water content: dry (kibble), semi-moist, and moist. Dry pellet dog and cat food is made in two different ways: extruding and baking. Most commercial dog and cat foods are made from materials unusable or less desirable for human consumption. These may include meat by-products, meat-and-bone meals, and grain by-products. Less expensive dog and cat foods generally include less meat, and more animal by-products and grain "fillers". Some manufacturers offer 'premium', 'natural' or 'holistic' formulas that are by-product free and contain less or no grains. The most expensive dog and cat foods may be made of ingredients suitable for human consumption, organic products, or free-range meats. There are also some specialty types of dog and cat food. For example, some pet owners who are vegetarians do not want their pets eating meat. There are vegetarian dog and cat foods available. --What to Look For in Dog & Cat Food-- Many dog and cat owners find that it is a good idea to speak to their veterinarian to help them make an educated choice on what foods to feed their pets. Some veterinarians may recommend premium labels, while others may tell you that most name-brand labels of dog and cat food will meet your pet's nutritional needs. Dog and cat foods labeled as "complete and balanced" must meet standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) either by meeting a nutrient profile or by passing a feeding trial. Dog and cat food products that are substantiated to be "complete and balanced" by feeding trials will have the statement "animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that (name of product) provides complete and balanced nutrition." --Dog and cat owners need a reliable source to buy food for their pets.
